Mathwin

Matt has been part of the Boston electronic music community since 1997, when he returned home from college in Chicago. He started raving in Chicago in the mid 90s, and loved the underground nature of the parties, complete with checkpoints and passwords. He discovered the Boston scene by attending Hump Wednesdays at the Phoenix Landing and the legendary Redlight warehouse parties. His love of the underground scene blossomed when he encountered the Circle crew at the Paradise in Cambridge. He became an integral member of the Circle crew and helped them land a new home at the VFW in Davis Square, Somerville. Matt went from party-goer, to party-thrower, and finally to party-DJ, being inspired by dance floor masters Shannon Shalako and Shwilly B, to become Mathwin.

Mathwin began spinning vinyl, techno and trance mostly, until he fell in love with Psy-Trance at an under-the-bridge outdoor party in NYC. He helped Circle to host a weekly party for two years, as well as throw a few momentous all nighters around Boston, usually focused on local talent and community participation. He then went on to join forces with Dino of Changmian productions and co-hosted the Psy-Trance weekly, Anitya, at the Vertigo lounge in Boston for 2 years. The Anitya weekly resumed where the previously weekly, Samsara at the Hong Kong, had left off.

The weeklies fostered the growth of the Psy-Trance community in Boston, featuring a healthy mix of local DJs from around New England, talent from around the US, including; Dutch, Adam Ohana/Antennae, Vajra, Mist, Hidro-Ponik, Greenman, Steve-O, Jamin, Gavin, Hugh Sharpe, Kalyx, Mia, Isam, Vadim, Kife, Vitalik, Sh.I.K.I.D, Kri, and Blue Spectral Monkey. Collaborations with Killinfloor Productions and Spectra Productions allowed a generous dose of international stars as well, including; Dimitri, Son Kite, Paul Taylor, Talamasca, Absolum/Christof, Nomad/Mael, Oforia, Peter Didjital, Torry, Penta, Emok, Oryx, Sangeet, Noma, Bim, Karan, Junya/Eskimo, Liran, Yoni, and Pablo.

The family vibe and excitement created by the Anitya weekly was carried on in the Psyforia monthly, hosted by the Sonic Beating crew. After returning from a hiatus in the East Bay area of California, Mathwin immediately joined forces with his old friends in Sonic Beating. He felt right at home with the excited energy, was happy to see so many fresh faces, and most of all eager to bring his familiar sound back to the Boston dance floors.

Mathwin has developed into an accomplished DJ over the last 10 years, with a talent for playing music to fit the mood. He has learned how to work a dance floor, whether it is as a warm-up to get people grooving, his preferred night-time devastation, or the early-morning uplifting journey. No matter what the mood, his style has remained uncompromisingly focused on the most finely produced and interesting tracks in the Full-on Psy-Trance arena. He sets are usually comprised of a mix of classic tracks as well as the latest cuts available from his favorite artists such as; GMS, 1200 Mics, Space Tribe, Absolum, Mekkanikka, Kindzadza, Space Buddha, Derango, Psykovsky, and CPU. With an outstanding ability to delve into the dance floor psyche, he consistently conducts an extraordinary journey.

On the personal side, Matt has an education in the History and Philosophy of Science, and works professionally full-time as a Database Architect as well as part-time as a Paramedic. Matt is very calm and collected, a chill dude that is easy to talk to and get along with. You’ll often find him engrossed in a conversation with a friend or stranger, and it’s his easy going character and calm demeanor that help to maintain a positive atmosphere at our parties and gatherings.
